By Sasa [44] feat. Sulki & Min
Text in English and Korean
ISBN 978–89–93061–26–0
Broadsheet, 840 x 560 mm when unfolded; board, 210 x 280 mm
10,000 KRW
2011
Published to accompany Sasa [44]’s installation 107 Numbers and 4 Words for the exhibition Space Study at Plateau, Seoul, 5 May – 10 July 2011

The broadsheet was originally meant to supplement Sasa [44]’s installation, which would have otherwise remained purely enigmatic. As a publication on its own right, it shows some interesting facts about the year 1999 – the facts that the artist highlighted by focusing on related numbers (and some words).

This book documents Technical Problem by Geumhyung Jeong, Chungwoo Lee and Jackson Hong, performed at Arko Arts Theater, Seoul, as part of the Festival Bo:m 2010. The performance was a collaboration between the designer-artist Jackson Hong, who selected and supplied various equipments as ‘props’ for the piece; the performer Geumhyung Jeong, who tried an ‘interplay’ with the inert objects onstage; and the writer Chungwoo Lee, who initiated the project and introduced the two artists to each other. The book starts from the middle: as a book reversed inside-out, having its ‘cover’ inside, the structure suggests the non-narrative nature of the performance. The pages alternate between the documentation photographs and the text, which includes a revealing transcription of the artists’ talk after the second and last performance on 24 April 2010.

By Lee Duegyoung
Text in English and Korean by Lim Geun-jun and Rhee Z-won
ISBN 978-89-93061-24-6
Flapped paperback, 180 x 240 mm, 176 pp; supplement, saddle-stitched, 120 x 180 mm, 16 pp
50,000 KRW
2010

This book presents Lee Duegyoung’s photography, Two Faces, which is ‘a panoramic picture of the Hangang riverside landscape, composed of about 13,000 photographs Lee took for four days on several boats (cleaning boat, cruise boat, municipal boat), traveling the 48 km waterway of the Hangang from the upper region of Misa-ri, Gyeonggi-do, passing through Seoul, all the way down to Gimpo area, Gyeonggi-do’. Conceptually, Two Faces is a combination of two books: one with the north side view and the other the south side. The book is constructed as if the two books are put together bottom-to-bottom, so that the two views from the Hangang correspond to each other geographically. A short, personal essay by Rhee Z-won, reflecting the modern history of the Hangang, is included as a supplement.

Published to document The Power of Color, the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art Handspan Gallery Health Center Project, 2009, by the collective SMSM: Sasa [44], MeeNa Park, and Sulki & Min. The Health Center Project, which was inspired by the ‘color therapy’ theory of Dr. Morton Walker, is documented in the first 32 pages with essays by Hong-hee Kim, Geun-jun Lim and Kyung-hwan Yeo. The rest of the book is made simply of different kinds of colored paper, with no information except brief quotations from Dr. Walker’s book The Power of Color (1991) on the alleged physiological effects of each color: try to feel the power for yourself! The cover pays homage to both Dr. Walker’s book and Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon (1973).

This book was published to accompany Duegyoung Lee’s solo exhibition, ‘Teheran’, at the Gallery D+, Korea Design Foundation, Seoul, 2009. The photographer Duegyoung Lee has been methodically documenting urban spaces, and for this exhibition he took a series of aerial photographs of Teheran Street in Seoul, and combined them to a very long, single photograph. In this catalogue, the image is divided to six parts, each printed over two pages with the introductory essay and other information printed on the back. The book is left unbound, so the reader can rearrange the sheets to reconstruct the entire photographs.

The text contained in this book consists of greeting messages from the catalogues published for the exhibitions at the Arko Art Center, Arts Council Korea, during the last three decades. In transcribing the published texts, current Korean orthography has been ignored in favour of fidelity. Any errors and typos in the original texts, unless critically misleading, have been kept without correction. While the best effort has been made for accurate transcription, no claim is made for its ultimate perfection. The sources are credited in the last pages of this book. Thank you very much.
